Popping in for a Quick PSA

While I'm still largely MIA piecing my new home together, I wanted to post about two very important things going on in October.

First, as many of you know, October is National Breast Cancer Awareness MonthSince the program began in 1985, mammography rates have more than doubled for women age 50 and older and breast cancer deaths have declined.  This is exciting progress, but there are still women who do not take advantage of early detection at all and others who do not get screening mammograms and clinical breast exams at regular intervals.

“The key to mammography screening is that it be done routinely – once is not enough.”

For more information about NBCAM, please visit www.nbcam.org. For additional information, please call one of the following toll-free numbers: American Cancer Society,

(800) 227-2345, National Cancer Institute (NCI), (800) 4-CANCER, Y-ME National Breast Cancer Organization, (800) 221-2141.

Second, October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month.  Did you know that 1 in 4 women will be a victim of domestic abuse?  A lot of these woman will remain silent due to fear of abuse escalating if they speak out, fear people will not believe them or simply out of a sense of unnessecary shame.

Here are the facts: emotional abuse is just as damaging as physical abuse, 9 out of 10 times abuse escalates and no woman should ever feel unsafe with someone she loves.

Signs of an abusive partner: He is entitled and believes his needs are your responsibility, he tends to see his partner as less intelligent, less logical + even less sensitive than he is, he is a master at getting his partner to feel sorry for him and using confusion tactics in an argument, he believes everyone and everything other than himself is responsible for his actions.

If you or someone you care about is in an abusive relationship let them know there is help.

The National Domestic Abuse Hotline: 1-800-799-SAFE

Please spread the word about both NBCAM and National Domestic Violence Awareness Month - both are very important causes that deserve our attention.
